Hurricane 'WEEKLY' Newsletter for June 5th - 9th, 2023

Happy Saturday you A-W-E-S-O-M-E Hurricanes!

Well, we made it!  It's June!

Please peruse our attached Hurricane 'WEEKLY' Newsletter for June 5th - 9th, 2023 for a look-ahead to what's happening.

Just some important reminders;
  • This is the last week for book exchanges from our library
  • Congratulations to our Grade 3s who completed their EQAO Assessments this past week.
  • Best wishes to our Grade 6s who complete their EQAO Assessments this week.
  • Our Grade 6s had a blast at their year-end trip at the Jays game followed by a happy gathering at Boston Pizza!
  • Special shoutout to our Girls and Boys Baseball Teams and their dedicated coaches who represented our school with tremendous class and sportsmanship at the WCDSB 3-Pitch Baseball Tournaments this week at Guelph Lake Sports Fields.  Shoutout to the girls who took home the championship!
  • Families are invited to join us for our final school mass this Friday, June 12th with Father Valentine @ 9:30am!
  • We applaud Mr. Schmalz, our students and the support of Mr. Glaab (Healthy Active Living Resource Coordinator) for beginning the construction of our "raised vegetable gardens" at the side of our school.  We will be looking for community volunteers over the summer to help us maintain them!  Stay tuned for details.
  • They have completed paving at the east side of our school.  The paving covers up the blemishes left by the removal of a portable.  This will increase space for our students to play at recess with some added courts.
  • Thank you for everyone's support with our Colours SPIRIT DAY on Thursday, June 1st in support of PRIDE Month.  Throughout the year, we have invited staff and students to wear different colours and raised several flags to honour Dwarfism, Truth & Reconciliation, NeuroDiversity, Autism Awareness, National Workers Day of Mourning, Remembrance Day, World Down Syndrome Day, Pink Day Anti-Bullying and so much more.  They are "outward" signs of our support to make our schools and communities safe and welcoming places for all!
  • Please peruse the attached Track and Field Schedule for the WCDSB Large Schools Competition which takes place this week, should you be interested in attending and cheering some of our Hurricanes on!
In conclusion, we will leave you with two special pieces of scripture and prayer that we shared with our student body at our Pride Flag raising ceremony on Thursday,   First, St. Paul reminds us how much God loves and how we all have "gifts" to offer to the world and to each other.  As St. Paul puts it, God so desires us to use these STRENGTHS and TALENTS and to never forget how interdependent we are TO and FOR each other!

We have many parts in the one body, and all these parts have different functions. In the same way, though we are many, we are one body in union with Christ, and we are all joined to each other as different parts of one body. So we are to use our different gifts in accordance with the grace that God has given us. If our gift is to speak God's message, we should do it according to the faith that we have; if it is to serve, we should serve; if it is to teach, we should teach; if it is to encourage others, we should do so. Whoever shares with others should do it generously; whoever has authority should work hard; whoever shows kindness to others should do it cheerfully.

And St. Francis reinforces this by reminding us that God created us to be "instruments of His peace and love."  As our world becomes increasingly fractured, polarized and divided by political issues, we cannot steer away from our obligation to teach our young people how they can BE THE CHANGE in the world in which they wish to see;

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

As we say to the students on a weekly basis;

DO YOUR BEST, ENCOURAGE OTHERS and NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP.

Take care of yourselves and each other! Have a terrific weekend Hurricanes
